In a large mixing bowl, combine the diced apples with the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Stir gently to ensure all dry ingredients are evenly mixed and the apples are coated.
In a separate medium-sized bowl, whisk together the milk, beaten egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter until all the wet ingredients are well incorporated and smooth.
Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, stirring lightly until just combined. Be cautious not to overmix; a few lumps are totally acceptable.
Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for about 5 minutes, allowing it to reach the desired cooking temperature.
Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Use a tablespoon to scoop and drop dollops of the fritter batter into the basket, ensuring to leave enough space between each fritter for proper expansion during cooking.
Air fry the fritters for 10-12 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time. Look for a golden brown color and ensure they are cooked through before removing them from the air fryer.
If you choose to glaze the fritters, prepare the glaze by mixing the powdered sugar and milk in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle generously over the warm fritters right after they come out of the air fryer for a sugary finish.
Notes
Serve warm and consider adding a sprinkle of powdered sugar for presentation.
